Self-care. It’s a term we hear everywhere these days—plastered on Instagram, sold to us by wellness brands, and touted by influencers. But somewhere along the way, the true meaning of self-care has become diluted, packaged, and commodified. It’s often portrayed as indulgence—$120 leggings, spa days, or expensive lattes. While treating yourself is wonderful, the real essence of self-care is much simpler, and frankly, much more accessible.

At its core, self-care is about consistently making small, daily choices that honor your well-being, both mentally and physically. It’s about doing what truly fuels you. When boiled down, self-care is taking the time to listen to your own needs and choosing actions that support them.

What Self-Care Really Looks Like

For many of us, self-care is basic. It’s making sure we’ve had enough sleep, remembering to drink water, setting boundaries when people or situations drain our energy, and finding moments to breathe deeply in the midst of chaos.

Let’s take it a step further:

  • Getting Enough Sleep: Prioritizing rest is one of the most effective forms of self-care. Sleep rejuvenates the body and mind, and sets us up to be our best selves each day.
  • Drinking Water: Hydration is the simplest way to nurture our bodies, yet it’s easy to forget. Making it a habit to care for your physical health is self-respect in its truest form.
  • Setting Boundaries: Saying “no” when something doesn’t serve you is one of the most empowering acts of self-care. It’s about preserving your energy for the things that matter most.
  • Focusing on Breathing: Taking a moment to center yourself with a few deep breaths can reset your entire day. It’s a quick, powerful way to calm your mind and body.

These practices may seem small, but they are the foundational actions that allow us to stay grounded, balanced, and connected to ourselves.

Breaking Free from the Self-Care Myths

The idea that self-care is something extravagant, or that it only happens during vacations or when we have “spare time,” is a myth. In reality, self-care is built on the tiny moments, the quiet decisions, and the choices we make every day to nurture ourselves.

I remember a time when I barely had two pennies to rub together. The idea of indulging in luxuries was far from my reality, yet I still managed to care for myself. It didn’t cost me a cent to go to bed earlier, to listen to my inner voice, or to say “no” when needed. These actions cost nothing, but they made a world of difference.

When you consistently choose the options that fuel you—whether they’re physical, emotional, or mental—you’re practicing self-care. And the more you do it, the easier it becomes.
